The digital Megger insulation tester practices a testing method applying an insulation tester resistance meter that helps check & confirm the electrical insulation's state. An electrical system's Insulation resistance quality deteriorates with time and environmental circumstances, including temperature, moisture, humidity, and dust shreds. It also gets affected negatively due to electrical and mechanical force, so it's a requisite to check an equipment's Insulation resistance-IR at a steady & precise interval to avoid any disaster or electrical shock.

The IR measures an insulator's lasting power to handle the service voltage without any current leakage path & an insulator's condition. It is measured through a device called the Megger tester that automatically estimates and illustrates the IR value.

Megger testers are well-known & trusted as best for - Insulation Resistance and Megger Test.

The need for Megger Testing

We must check the Insulation resistance- IR of equipment at a constant regular interval. It avoids disastrous consequences or electrical shock as the Insulation resistance quality of an electrical system deteriorates over time.

Testing through Megger testers does not let any loss or damage happen & only goes with low volts, which are between 500 and 1,000 volts. Due to low voltage, some holes in insulation run undetected & it gives data about the leakage current, whether insulation ranges have extreme dirt or moisture, deterioration, and winding effects.

Megger Testing Process

Megger testers can examine circuits for the current connections and melted fault areas, primarily in case of a fire event. Proper analysis, isolations, and replacement assures no further difficulties in the modified circuits.

Megger Test Working

A multimeter is worked upon as an insulation tester in some conditions and to perform a continuity test. It detects and tests a leakage current during a regular or overloaded condition from devices like motor, cable, generator winding, and even general electrical installation. It does not necessarily show us the exact area of the electrical puncture, but it shows the quantity of leakage current and moisture level within the electrical system.

Megger Test Safety Precautions

While using a megger test, there are some safety precautions one must practice:

  • Use Megger test on high-resistance measurements only. It could include insulation measures or checking two different conductors on a cable.

  • One must not touch the testing points while the holder is being cranked.

  • De-energize and remove the circuit thoroughly before joining a megger test.

  • Detach the item being checked from other circuitry before using a megger test.
