A FLIR thermal camera can quickly identify tiny differences in heat—as small as 0.01°C—and show them as shades of grey or with different color palettes. The iron bow and white hot palettes also display identical images with heat differences. Everything we deal with in our day-to-day lives gives off thermal energy—even ice.
Ideally, a thermal camera takes a snap and creates an image of an object by using infrared radiation released from the object in a process that is called thermal imaging. The formed image represents the temperature of the object. The basic technology of thermal imaging cameras was first established for the military.
The usual standard today for thermal cameras is to show warm objects with a yellow-orange hue, and as the object gets hotter, it gets brighter. Colder objects are exhibited with a blue or purple color.
Infrared energy has a wavelength beginning from approximately 700 nanometers and extends to approximately 1mm. Wavelengths shorter than this can be easily visible to the naked eye. Thermal imaging cameras make use of infrared energy to form thermal images. The camera lens targets the infrared energy onto a set of detectors, forming a detailed pattern called a thermogram. The thermogram is then transformed into electrical signals to create a thermal image that we are able to see and interpret.
So, what is the difference between thermal imaging and FLIR? Thermal imaging cameras are actually sensors that discover heat rather than cameras (also known as thermal energy or infrared). These appliances detect radiation in a technical sense. The quantum of radiation increases as the temperature rises. FLIR and Fluke cameras build pictures from heat, not visible light.
