A Megohmmeter
(insulation resistance tester), is a unique type of ohmmeter that is used to
measure the electrical resistance of insulators. Insulating constituents, for
example, cable jackets, must be tested to know their insulation strength at the
time of authorization and as a segment of maintenance of high voltage
electrical equipment and installations.
For this purpose, megohmmeters,
are used. that provide high DC voltages (usually in ranges from 400 V to 4 kV,
at some definite current capacity. insulator resistance values that are
acceptable are typically 1 to 10 megohms, totally depending upon the standards
referenced.
The following are
the uses of megger,
·
It is
used to measure electrical wire insulation resistance
·
It is
also used to evaluate electrical systems and components
·
Megger
is also used to install wind and to test battery, relay, ground
connection, and other tests
·
It also
works as a Megger Earth tester.
Advantages of Megger
·
Its
operation is quite simple
·
It makes
use of a small DC Generator, Permanent Magnet type
·
It
doesn't need an external power source like a wire or battery to plug in
·
The cost
of a megger is also quite low.
·
Physical
damages can be made out with the help of a megger which can avoid electrical
shock due to leakages.
Disadvantages of
Megger
·
The time
required for measurement is high
·
The
accuracy of this product is not very high
